Anything in excess of what it should be will have a negative impact, including when eating. Excessive eating can be dangerous for the body’s health, from triggering obesity, increasing the risk of chronic disease, and can even cause mental problems, you know! Therefore, regulating how much food enters the body is very important. Do you know what causes overeating that often occur? And what’s the solution?
These are some of the reasons why people overeat
1. Fatigue
Fatigue is one of the causes of overeating that you are not aware of. Fatigue resulting from lack of sleep reduces people’s ability to control their appetite without realizing it.
Research from the Preceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that people who don’t get enough sleep can eat up to 5% more calories per day compared to people who get enough rest. Often this is due to eating more at night.
Fatigue can ultimately also increase the risk of stress. Stress can also affect a person’s desire to eat. There are some people who take out their stress on food so they tend to eat more.
2. Too hungry
Being too hungry because you missed one meal can also be a cause of overeating. Skipping meals on purpose is usually done to lose weight. But in fact, this actually has the opposite effect.
When the body passes a proper meal time, the body will feel very hungry. When the body is too hungry, the body feels that it needs a lot of energy from food to survive. This is why people tend to eat more, aka “revenge”.
Research conducted at Cornell University also found that people who skip meals and starve their bodies actually eat 31% more junk food compared to people who eat snacks as a buffer beforehand when choosing food.
So, what happens if you eat junk food until you go crazy? Foods that are rich in fat and salt sugar actually create new problems, namely increasing fat deposits in the body.
3. Not focusing while eating
How often do you eat while playing on your smartphone, watching TV, or playing on your laptop? Or have you ever eaten while working at the computer? Well, did you know that multitasking while eating reduces the body’s ability to perceive the amount of food you eat. In this way, it’s as if you don’t feel how much food you’re getting and this could be the cause of overeating.
Research shows that eating while watching makes you consume more food and reduces your ability to remember how much food you have eaten. In fact, scientists say that remembering how much food you have eaten can increase awareness of how filling the food is, so that this will have an impact on the amount of food consumed next.
4. Too much sugar
Apart from increasing the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, consuming too much sugar can also make you overeat to the point of going crazy.
Excess sugar disrupts the function of your body’s appetite control system. Under normal conditions, when we eat, the body will reduce the hormone ghrelin (hunger hormone), so that we no longer feel hungry, and release the hormone leptin (satiety hormone) so that we feel full and stop eating.
However, when you consume too much sugar, the body fails to suppress the hormone ghrelin (hunger hormone) and is less effective in releasing the hormone leptin (satiety hormone). This is what can make someone always hungry and eat a lot.
